Celebrating Our Continued Commitment To The UK Steel Charter
4
As we look back on our journey supporting British manufacturing, we're proud to celebrate another year as a signatory of the UK Steel Charter—a commitment that reflects our long-standing belief in the strength, resilience, and importance of the UK's steel industry.
Since joining the UK Steel Charter in 2020, Trent Refractories has remained dedicated to championing UK-made steel and supporting the domestic supply chain. Our commitment has always gone beyond words; it is part of our wider mission to strengthen British manufacturing, preserve skilled jobs, and contribute to a more sustainable industrial future.
The UK steel industry continues to play a vital role in building the nation's infrastructure and economy. Every year, around 7.3 million tonnes of steel are produced in the UK—meeting approximately 65% of the country's annual steel requirements. Supporting UK steel means supporting thousands of skilled jobs, investing in local communities, reducing transport emissions, and strengthening the resilience of British industry.
For every 1,000 tonnes of steel produced in the UK:
- 4 people are employed directly, with a further 6.6 jobs supported throughout the supply chain.
- Around £880,000 is contributed to the UK economy.
- Approximately 960 tonnes of steel are recycled for future use.
- Around 150 tonnes of CO2 emissions are saved compared with importing steel from Europe.
As a British manufacturer founded in 1989, Trent Refractories has always believed in sourcing, investing, and working within UK industry wherever possible. Our support for the UK Steel Charter aligns perfectly with our values of quality, innovation, and strengthening domestic manufacturing for future generations.
Looking back over the past several years, we're proud to have stood alongside organisations across the public and private sectors that share the vision of putting UK steel at the heart of major projects. As the industry continues to evolve, our commitment remains as strong as ever. Here's to another year of supporting British steel, British manufacturing, and the supply chains that keep our industry moving forward. On average Trent Refractories buys 13-15 tonnes of british steel every year. Since 2020, that means we have purchased 6 years x 15t = 90t of steel = 1 local job in the economy.
