1st March 2024 - Trent Refractories Careers Talk With Durham University

This Friday 1st March we are offering an online Careers Talk for the Arthur Holmes Geological Society (Part of Durham University). In the 1hr session I will inform students in the society about the refractory industry and what opportunities a choice of career in our industry can offer and give students the opportunity to ask questions.

AHGS is a student-run departmental organisation at Durham University for all Earth Scientists. The society is run for students, by students, and organises a number of events throughout the year, including social events, industry speakers, career seminars and group field trips. AHGS aims for undergraduates, postgraduates, lecturers, staff, and alumni to integrate with one another, to further their university experience.

1st February 2024 - Apprenticeships As A Tool For Unlocking Talent & Building Skills

Apprenticeships are the best tool for unlocking talent and building a skilled manufacturing workforce. There is a need to address the perception that apprenticeships are inferior to traditional academic routes. Many young people and their parents are unaware of the opportunities and benefits that apprenticeships offer in terms of career progression and earning potential.

In the wider Yorkshire and Humber region, Trent Refractories is a Scunthorpe-based manufacturer and supplier of bespoke refractory solutions, supplying the UK market as well as exporting to customers around the world. The company was founded in 1989 and has a strong British industrial heritage. Two generations on, the company is still owned and managed by the same family who have been joined over the years by a knowledgeable and experienced team.

Katy Moss is the company’s CEO and she is passionate about flying the flag for British manufacturing and she’s also a huge champion of developing new talent within the business. Katy says: “We must invest in our next generation to enable the skills of generations to be passed down, otherwise we risk losing strategically important manufacturing for our country. Some skills are so specialist and niche that hiring for those positions becomes increasingly more challenging and a ‘grow your own’ approach must be taken as an investment for the future.”

There are numerous opportunities for employers who are looking to the future, but that doesn’t exclusively mean young, male talent as was once the case. Upskilling and reskilling programmes don’t just have to be designed for a company’s existing workforce. Career changers and ‘mature’ workers are almost untapped sources of talent. New advances in robotics are set to support more physically disabled people into manufacturing roles. Striving for better gender balance is another massive opportunity, but this requires investment in proper facilities on sites that often never accommodated women. The manufacturers of Yorkshire undoubtedly have what it takes to overcome these challenges and ensure that apprenticeships continue to drive growth, innovation, and a skilled workforce in the manufacturing sector. To answer the age-old question: Are we there yet? No, we’re not, but we’re getting closer year on year.

9th January 2024 - Trent Refractories Growth Plan With UK Shared Prosperity Fund Support

Trent Refractories planning growth thanks to UK Shared Prosperity Fund Support. Scunthorpe-based Trent Refractories has launched an ambitious business growth plan to win new clients and expand further into international markets.

The plan, backed with a grant from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF), included upgrades to internal systems and a new digital marketing campaign. The project relaunched the company as refractory ambassadors, with the help of a website restructure, case studies and a new promotional video. The company also upgraded its internal systems, transitioning away from an outdated, inefficient work path to one that improved the customer management journey throughout the whole manufacturing process.

Trent Refractories managing director Katy Moss stated: “UKSPF funding has meant we are able to really go for a fresh new look on our marketing front in a way that we would not have been able to without it, the timing worked well following an assessment of where we were as a company and how we wanted to take things forward. We are hoping to see some different types of sales and diversity of products rather than being so heavily invested in iron and steel making and position ourselves slightly differently in the market in such a way that we become more custodians or ambassadors for our niche industry.

"It should attract people who want to work with us on all fronts and enable a UK company to demonstrate its commitment to a sustainable future for the foundation's industries. I hope we can continue to work together with North Lincolnshire Council and other local business as partners, try and hone in on where funding is needed the most and what would make the biggest impacts to really help Scunthorpe and the surrounding areas truly ‘level up’ and make it an area that companies want to do business.”

Cllr Rob Waltham, leader, North Lincolnshire Council, added: “This is exactly what the UKSPF should be doing for businesses enabling our core industries to level up and modernise in order to compete on a global scale. I have no doubt Trent will go from strength to strength with this forward-thinking attitude and the support from the Government. This will create new jobs and new opportunities in traditional industries.”

21st September 2023 - EAF Delta Roofs Shipped to the USA Still Going Strong

It is almost a year since our EAF Delta Roofs left our manufacturing facility for the USA. We are pleased to announce that after successful trials the these refractory products are working well on location. Made at our factory in Scunthorpe our EAF Roof Deltas are known and highly respected in the UK market and we hold the record for roof lives at a local steel works, over 1000 heats!

Electric Arc Furnace Roofs & Deltas - Back in the early 1990’s Trent pioneered the use of a chrome based material in the refractory industry for making precast EAF Roofs and Deltas. Our precast EAF Roofs and deltas replaced older Electric Arc Furnace Roof technology where they built out of Silica, and then High Alumina bricks. It was found to be a better performer and also improved risks associated with the brick roofs cracking and falling into the furnace, which was quite a common occurrence.

Trent not only made EAF Roofs safer, but also use a unique material which is cost effective and gives greater service life. In the Electric Arc Furnace, scrap metal is melted using an electrical and chemical process. This is a very high energy process and the function of the Refractory EAF Roof or Delta is to enclose the furnace and minimise energy losses. An Electric Arc Furnace can reach temperatures in excess of 1700 degrees, with that the Electric Arc Furnace Roof is subject to exposure from various slag and metal oxides. The insulating properties of the refractory surrounding the electrodes are paramount against the thermal wear generated by the furnace.

4th September 2023 - Trent Refractories Welcomes A TransFIRe Hub Colleague

We have recently welcomed one of our colleagues Ahmed Khalil from TransFIRe Hub on work experience with our technical team. Ahmed has spent a week progressing technical projects focusing on the re-use of foundation industry waste streams in refractories and also analysing the properties of other raw materials to enable us to broaden and deepen our knowledge of their performance in use and behaviours. We have really enjoyed having Ahmed as part of our team and found his presentations very useful. Thanks to him and the TransFIRe team for making it happen.

TransFIRe is a UKRI-funded (ISCF TFI challenge) programme investigating how the foundations industries including cement, metals, ceramics and glass, paper and chemicals can develop innovative solutions to reduce energy and resource use. It is a proactive, interdisciplinary, inclusive research and practice driven hub with 12 research organisations based in the UK and more than 80 project partners from across the foundation industries, trade associations, professional membership bodies, civic sector and government organisations. Trent Refractories is a partner of the TransFIREe project (Transforming Foundation Industries Research & Innovation Hub).

This new investment will help revolutionise how our products will be manufactured and we are looking forward to getting this installed and working. TEKA Turbine Mixers THT offers a unique mix-turbine mixing system for the highest-standard premium concrete products as well as for the most difficult mixing tasks. Turbine mixers are custom-built to the individual requirements and the specific mixing task. The drive power, the diameter of the mixing pan and the number of mixturbines are variable and specifically chosen for each single mixing task. 20th June 2023 - Insider's Q&A Interview With Katy Moss

In the latest instalment of Insider's Q&A series on the Northern Powerhouse, Katy Moss, Managing Director of Trent Refractories and non-executive board director at Made in Britain, discusses what the initiative means to her, the need to support the UK's foundation industries, and the importance of a collective strategy covering for the whole of the North.

What does the Northern Powerhouse mean to you?
The Northern Powerhouse is a means of putting the North back on the map in a positive light rather than with the historic grubby references of the past. We get things done in the North - including over a quarter of the UK's manufacturing - and I think it is important that the region is recognised.

Nine years have passed since the phrase 'Northern Powerhouse' was first coined. Has enough happened since then?
It takes time for things like this to gather pace, and also for perceptions to change. When we are looking for investment in a particular area, companies have to get the right feeling about the place, see that it is up and coming and then they start to think about getting on the bandwagon and putting an investment into their strategy. This all happens before the plunge is taken. We are just starting to see the pace gather now, so further pushes with transport links or incentives would be well timed.

How is the appointment of metro mayors starting to help the initiative?
Hopefully they will have a positive impact, although sometimes I get concerned that there are too many titles and not enough people with actual understanding of what needs to change and making change happen. My belief is that we need industry people to drive efficiency and change.

What needs to be done to help the North recover from the Covid-19 outbreak?
We have to make sure people are getting back into work and getting through the backlog. Nationally, we need to be thinking outside the box as to how we can achieve this.

What is the single main issue you would like to see dominate the Northern Powerhouse agenda?
Levelling up for the foundation industries, for sure. There has been a lot of focus on advanced manufacturing, but if we look after the basics - glass, cement, steel, ceramics and such - we will also be able to continue to make everything we need here. These industries have been depleted so much by international competition and we are in danger of losing our basic infrastructure, leading to needing to import even more than we already do. This would go against the UK's Net Zero agenda and its defence strategy, so we need to ensure we look after these important industries and help them progress.

Is there enough collaboration between towns and cities across the North?
Nowhere near enough. I think the Northern Powerhouse does demonstrate a common strategy, which is what's needed, but we all need to work together more to make our area a better place. I believe we need a collective strategy that is 'cross party' and where we all work together, all the time - a step change in how we progress before we are left behind. This way more open, honest and transparent discussions could happen without people being worried about being 'voted out' or the 'agenda' changing.

How would the success of the Northern Powerhouse agenda benefit your business?
I think it would have a positive impact in terms of the 'soft power' element of the business. When you associate the term Northern Powerhouse with a business based in the North, people's perception is you are a company that 'gets things done' - this can only be a good thing. Further, when these companies are successful, other businesses that use similar products and services should also thrive as a result. Another positive impact would be through development of local skills to help reduce labour shortages and inspire the younger generation as well.

19th June 2023 - Research Programme to Investigate Hydrogen’s Impact on Refractories

Work is due to start on research examining the potential impact on industrial processes when using hydrogen as an alternative fuel source. The UK's Materials Processing Institute has announced a research partnership with Trent Refractories and Kanthal to examine the potential impact on refractories of using hydrogen.

The Materials Processing Institute has established a research agreement to examine the potential impact on industrial processes of using hydrogen as an alternative fuel source. We are pleased to be part of the research project and more information will be announced over the course of the project.

Chris McDonald, chief executive of the Teesside-headquartered Materials Processing Institute, said: "The results of this collaborative research programme could have far-reaching effects given the range of industries that depend on refractory solutions, including iron and steel, aluminium, glass, power generation, petrochemicals and chemicals, and cement. Hydrogen is widely used here at the Institute, and it is crucial that we assess how it is used to help deliver long term solutions that shape and support the UK's transition to a low carbon economy."

Bob James, technical collaboration lead at the Institute, added: "It's already proven that hydrogen is an alternative clean fuel source capable of powering the majority of industrial processes. However, research is essential to assess how hydrogen may impact on the processes themselves, including its effect on refractory lining systems, the corrosion of certain compositions, and accelerated wear."

Katy Moss, Managing Director of Trent Refractories Ltd and the president of the Institute of Refractory Engineers, said: "We are very much looking forward to working with such dynamic partners. It means a lot to the team here at Trent Refractories, to be part of the solutions that enable our foundation industries not only to survive but to sustainably thrive."

16th June 2023 - Trent Refractories Visiting METEC & GIFA In Dusseldorf

Katy Moss & Rebecca Kennedy from Trent Refractories visited METEC and GIFA trade shows in Dusseldorf Germany, which ran from 12th June to 16th June 2023 at the Dusseldorf Exhibition Centre. Both of these exhibitions are globally renowned as the place to go for our industry. GIFA is recognised as the most important trade fair for foundry technology in the world and a leading trade fair for the metals industry.

GIFA, looks back on a long tradition in the Düsseldorf trade fair portfolio and offers the almost complete world range in the areas of foundry and melting plants, refractory technology, plants and machinery for mold and core production, molding materials and molding supplies, model and mold making, control technology and automation, environmental protection and waste disposal as well as information technologies. Celebrating its tenth anniversary, The Manufacturer Top 100 is a showcase of those individuals who go that extra mile in their work. 2nd April 2023 - Environmental, Social & Corporate Governance (ESG) Management Audit

Back in December 2022 Trent refractories received a gold standard award from EcoVadis placing us in the top 5 percent of companies of comparable size and industry. Tens of thousands of companies partner with EcoVadis to collaborate on sustainability with a common platform, universal scorecard, benchmarks and performance improvement tools. We are pleased to announce that we have also just completed another assessment with EcoVadis and we remain committed to the sustainability of our global operation.

This framework is very much part of our Environmental, social, and corporate governance (ESG) management and at the very heart of our business. We have also received a recent communication and unusual company logo from the assessment partner for EcoVadis which is shown in the image and its accompanying letter.

We visited the UK Concrete Show this week and spent the day finalising some measurements for our new mixing plant which was very exciting and coming up with more ideas to improve our processes and equipment. It was a great event showing the latest innovations for our industry sector.

All the industry's excitement under one roof! This is the #1 reason for visiting the show. As a business we are very keen to keep up to date on industry advancements which was a major reason to visit the show. 13th March 2023 - International Women's Day & Women In Manufacturing

International Women’s Day was last week on 8th March 2023. Trent Refractories is proud to support International Women’s Day and embrace equality. Our Managing Director Katy Moss, was asked for views and feedback to help future female manufacturers by a representative of the Manufacturing Growth Programme (MGP) website. The MGP wanted to connect with its wide network of female business leaders. A number of questions were asked including 'What challenges have you faced as a woman in manufacturing?' with the reply from Katy: “Being underestimated and dismissed as a serious buyer. There are very few of us at the moment so you need to be comfortable in a room full of men and be prepared to hold your own and get your point across.”

9th March 2023 - Trent Refractories Attending Humber Decarbonisation Programme Launch

Trent Refractories will be in attendance at the Cluster launch event today commencing at 12:30. Representatives from the Hull and East Yorkshire Local Enterprise Partnership (HEY LEP) will formally launch the Cluster Plan, and we will hear from Dr Bryony Livesey, Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund (ISCF) Director, Industrial Decarbonisation Challenge.

The planned celebration launch will see invited key stakeholders and guests come together on the 9th of March at one of the most coveted venues in our region - Docks Beers, Grimsby. The panel will comprise representatives from key regional deployment projects including Drax, SSE, Phillips 66 and Zero Carbon Humber. David Talbot, CEO will close the event and after we invite you to stay for additional networking alongside our exhibition, with the event closing at 17:00.

As the Climate Change Committee (CCC) has made clear, decarbonising industry is not just an option, it is a necessity if the UK is to reach its goal of achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions while delivering economic growth. The Humber Estuary and surrounding regions offer the opportunity to deliver the UK’s first zero carbon region and help position the North of England at the heart of the global energy revolution.

7th March 2023 - UK Steel Presentation At NMC 2023 - National Resilience & Steel Supply Chains

The weakening of our domestic steel industry could prove a significant threat to the UK's economic resilience and national security. Russia's invasion of Ukraine and Covid-19 have demonstrated the increased risk associated with fragile global supply chains, where producers often prioritise domestic demand. The UK produces much less than other G7 countries, and is therefore more exposed to global supply disruption. Domestic steel producers can provide a cushion of supply-chain resilience and also supply essential steel to the domestic defence industry.

Status quo is no longer an option, as state-subsidised global oversupply, high energy prices, and climate change targets have put pressure on the steel sector. UK Steel brings together a range of thought leaders from industry and academia to discuss these challenges and some of the solutions we will need to deploy. A fascinating series of discussions of interest to anyone within the manufacturing sector and materials supply chains.

We have worked with a number of customers to reduce the reliance on costly refractory precast products. We are the only refractory company to offer inbuilt economisers around the ports in the delta, cutting down the need to buy three separate large precast pieces every time.

23rd November 2022 - Plans for Growth – Industry and Skills

Katy Moss, Managing Director of Trent Refractories and John Pearce, CEO of Made in Britain, attended the Plans For Growth - Industry and Skills Roundtable Event at the House of Lords on 22nd November 2022.

At the Labour Party conference in September 2022, party representatives made a number of education and skills policy announcements. Shadow Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds MP unveiled Labour’s Industrial Strategy plans “Prosperity Through Partnership”, which sets out how Labour would work across sectors to boost economic growth, investment, resilience and employment rights, aiming to provide certainty to both businesses and investors.

As part of this Industrial Strategy, Shadow Further Education and Skills Minister Toby Perkins MP further presented a proposal to create a new national skills body entitled Skills England. This body would work alongside businesses, unions and training providers to tackle the UK’s skills shortage.

Labour also announced their plans to reform the apprenticeship levy, promising to transform it into a ‘Growth and Skills Levy’ by making the levy more accessible to Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises and apprenticeships more targeted at entry level roles and education levels.

Further, a recent report by Labour’s Council of Skills Advisers, chaired by former Education and Employment Secretary Lord Blunkett, has set out a range of recommendations for a “radical overhaul of skills provision” in the UK.

18th November 2022 - The Manufacturer MX Awards 2022 Winners Announced!

The winners of The Manufacturer MX (TMMX) Awards 2022 were announced last night at a black tie ceremony and gala dinner in Liverpool, the culminating event of this year's Digital Manufacturing Week.

Organised by The Manufacturer in partnership with the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), The Manufacturer MX Awards are widely considered the gold standard in industry awards and are the only peer-reviewed and judged programme of their kind for UK manufacturing.

Katy Moss, Managing Director of Trent Refractories, said: “I was incredibly privileged to be invited to such a prestigious event full of like minded, forward thinking, manufacturers and experts. This event was about celebrating the incredible world class innovation and successes of British Manufacturers, it was nice to see such a diverse range of companies, established names and new ones together, also with a focus on the next generation”

The Manufacturer of the Year 2022 is Gripple Ltd, a Sheffield-based market-leading manufacturer of wire joiners and tensioners for agriculture, and suspension solutions for construction. Among the judges’ comments, Gripple was described as a “growing, innovative, people led company” and a “very customer aware and focused business”.

16th November 2022 - EAF Delta Roofs Shipped to the USA

Today we celebrated a lovely dispatch to the USA for our EAF Delta Roofs which we have been successfully trialling over there for the last couple of years. Made at our factory in Scunthorpe our EAF Roof Deltas are known and highly respected in the UK market and we hold the record for roof lives at a local steel works, over 1000 heats!

Electric Arc Furnace Roofs & Deltas - Back in the early 1990’s Trent pioneered the use of a chrome based material in the refractory industry for making precast EAF Roofs and Deltas. Our precast EAF Roofs and deltas replaced older Electric Arc Furnace Roof technology where they built out of Silica, and then High Alumina bricks. It was found to be a better performer and also improved risks associated with the brick roofs cracking and falling into the furnace, which was quite a common occurrence.

Trent not only made EAF Roofs safer, but also use a unique material which is cost effective and gives greater service life. In the Electric Arc Furnace, scrap metal is melted using an electrical and chemical process. This is a very high energy process and the function of the Refractory EAF Roof or Delta is to enclose the furnace and minimise energy losses. An Electric Arc Furnace can reach temperatures in excess of 1700 degrees, with that the Electric Arc Furnace Roof is subject to exposure from various slag and metal oxides. The insulating properties of the refractory surrounding the electrodes are paramount against the thermal wear generated by the furnace.

8th November 2022 - Taking The Heat During A Global Energy Crisis

Refractory Engineers from around the world gather in Sheffield for the annual conference and forum. Made in Britain CEO, John Pearce will be one of the keynote speakers at this year’s Institute of Refractory Engineers (IRE) Annual Conference entitled ‘Surviving the Energy Crisis’ which will be held on 9th November 2022 at the prestigious venue, The Mowbray in the steel making heartland of Sheffield, South Yorkshire.

“A growing and prosperous refractory sector is absolutely central to the successful growth of British manufacturing. The sophisticated, complex technologies involved in controlling high-temperature processes and environments requires experts and innovators to work collaboratively. I was delighted to be asked to speak at the IRE’s annual conference in 2022 celebrating its 61st anniversary. I look forward to being able to demonstrate later to our 1900 members, many of whom will be familiar with refractory, how they can interact with and support this vital sector for the future.”

IRE President and Made in Britain member at Trent Refractories, Katy Moss believes everyone should understand the vital role refractory plays in the successful foundations of manufacturing and raw material making. Katy explains: “The heavy and (very) hot engineering activities of refractory are what provides the conditions for the making of products and the lifestyles we are accustomed to, creating the wealth and prosperity for our great nation The Institute of Refractory Engineers (IRE) may not yet be the household name it would like to be, but their work affects every home in the UK, being essential to the building material sector (bricks, tiles, cement and glass) as well as foundation industries – chemicals, metals and paper.”

The foundation industries produce 75 per cent of all materials in the UK economy and are vital for the UK’s manufacturing and construction industries. Combined they are worth £52bn to the UK economy and produce 28m tonnes of materials per year, accounting for about ten per cent of the UK total CO2 emissions. Refractory engineering underpins industrial heat processes. Put simply, there would be no steel or glass industry without refractories.”

IRE is engaging with more people at all levels of the business and trade agenda. If we are to lead the world in any aspect of sustainable product technology and greener, cleaner manufacturing we must train and educate more engineers and inform wider society on all that is possible. Even highly advanced materials start their lifecycle as dirt in the ground. From that raw state, they are transformed by heat, and the enabler of this transformation, the enabler of the processes that make our ingenuity real, is Refractory Engineering. Meeting all the challenges we face requires skilled people who are willing to share best practices and offer collective solutions to today’s dilemmas.

IRE is a not-for-profit professional organisation for the refractories industry, connecting people with application knowledge, sharing insights and best practices to benefit the refractories engineering industry. It is celebrating 61 years since it was established. The IRE Annual Conference 2022 is entitled: Surviving the Energy Crisis and will be held on 9th November 2022 at The Mowbray, Sheffield. Katy Moss will be representing Trent Refractories at the "Growing Business Awards" event which will be held in London on Wednesday 23rd November 2022 at the Hilton London Bankside. Katy will be part of the judging team and present the Triumph over Adversity award.

6th September 2022 - Trent Refractories Meets With UK Trade Commissioner for Europe

Trent Refractories Managing Director Katy Moss recently met with Chris Barton, the UK Trade Commissioner for Europe, representing Made in Britain as a member for work done for the International Trade Panel. Discussions focused on trade difficulties with certain countries within the EU and how these could possibly be overcome. The meeting has enabled Trent Refractories to expand its network to talk directly with EU Country Export Directors with a view to removing trade barriers and encouraging EU countries to buy from and invest in UK business.

Chris Barton, HM Trade Commissioner to Europe, leads a team from the UK’s Department for International Trade based in 34 countries to encourage trade and investment between the UK and Europe.

We have integrated the use of a new technology which offers greater slag corrosion resistance and ultimately a longer service life for the ladle. The technology creates innovative microstructures by simultaneously sintering CaO-MgO-Al₂O₃, a composite hydraulic binder forms in conjunction with a micro-crystalline spinel phase. Here is a precast ladle lining project in which we used this material for a UK based customer.

1st August 2022 - Congratulations To England On Winning The 2022 Euro Final

We are very proud to see that the Women's England football team won their final at Wembley against the German national team. A big congratulations to the team for this achievement from Trent Refractories and on also raising the profile of the women's game across the UK and beyond. The crowd at Wembley totalled 87,192 which was a record attendance for a women's international fixture in Europe and for a European Championship finals match, men's and women's.

For England, this was their third appearance in a European Championship final and the first since 2009, when they lost to Germany. England also lost 4–3 on penalties to Sweden in their first final in 1984. England manager Sarina Wiegman became the first manager to win the Women's Euro with two different countries, having led her native Netherlands to the title in 2017. A big congratulations to everyone involved.

22nd July 2022 - Transforming Foundation Industries Research & Innovation Hub

This week we hosted a group of delegates from across the foundation industries and those supporting through universities as part of the TransFIRE project. The purpose of the visit was to see how we manufacture our products, whether there were any synergies with other industries and to also share best practices to enable the foundation industries to ‘level up’ and make the improvements they need to remain sustainable.

Areas we are focusing on are waste streams and deciphering if there are higher value in use opportunities for cross industries to utilise another’s waste, this could be anything from heat to spent product. All in the efforts of decarburisation and working towards a Net Zero approach. We also discussed Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, looking at the skills gap in the industry and how we attract tomorrow's generation into the foundation industries.

Trent Refractories are pleased to announce that they are now members of the British Ceramic Confederation (BCC). The British Ceramic Confederation is the trade body representing the collective interests of all sectors of the UK ceramics manufacturing industry. The Confederation supports and safeguards the industry’s prosperity by leading sector discussions and negotiations with Government and public authorities on key issues affecting British ceramic manufacturers. 11th July 2022 - Mighty Hike For Macmillan Cancer Support

Adam Mcphee from Trent Refractories has raised over £400 doing a hike to support Macmillan Cancer. 8th July 2022 - Transforming Foundation Industries Cohort Event

Trent Refractories Managing Director Katy Moss, attended an evening reception at the House of Lords for the Transforming Foundation Industries Cohort event, which took place on Thursday 23rd June at Church House, Westminster in London (before the House of Lords evening). The event brought together all of the organisation leads who have been funded across the competitions as part of the Innovate UK ISCF TFI Challenge. This event was a celebration for all the cohorts funded to date with opportunities for showcasing projects and cross-organisation networking with the wider TFI community and stakeholders.

7th July 2022 - Inspirational Assembly Visit To A Local School

Our MD Katy Moss took an Inspirational Assembly at a local primary school (Tickhill Estfeld) to share, with children ranging from reception to year 6, what exactly a refractory is, what Trent Refractories do as a business operation and the importance of British manufacturing. There was also a focus on keeping skills local within the community and also inspiring the next generation of young ladies that they can be anything they want in life, even a high temperature concrete maker!

13th May 2022 - Trent Refractories Visits The UK Concrete Show

Representatives from Trent Refractories visited the annual UK Concrete Show at the NEC in Birmingham which was held during May 2022. The show also represents the largest in terms of this sector across Europe. This was the 10th anniversary of the exhibition and had around 200 exhibitors over the two day event. Concrete technology represents a vital part of our operation as a leading UK refractory and we are always looking at ways to be at the forefront of our industry sector.

The show was a specialist event offering many innovations and technologies from industry specialists from all over the world. We had many face to face discussions with established and new contacts.

4th May 2022 - Global Steel Production Reduces Placing A Spotlight On UK Production

Global steel production fell by nearly 7% in the first three months of 2022 to just under 460 million tonnes according to the World Steel Association. The main factors were the conflict between Russia and Ukraine and the increase in Covid restriction measures in China. This has placed a spotlight on the UK as a window for increased production to meet global demand. Output in the European Union has also declined as a result of a third factor which is increased production costs. Steel production in the EU was just under 13 million tonnes in March 2022 seeing a fall of 8.5% compared with the same month in 2021.

Trent Refractories provide products, technology and expertise for the global steel industry and we are well serviced to cater for increased production within the UK manufacturing sector. Our role in the supply chain for steel production is global and we are in a strong position to support UK steel producers.

In the USA, the Joe Biden government has instigated a "Buy American" mandate for infrastructure projects which will in turn receive central government funding. This type of initiative could spread as a global format so it will be interesting to see what our very own UK government will do in the coming months to support the steel industry in light of recent events impacting the sector.

1st April 2022 - Europe’s Largest Steel Plant Has Been Destroyed

It has been reported in the news that the largest steel production plant in Europe has been destroyed in the ongoing conflict in the Ukraine. The economic losses for Ukraine are huge along with the surrounding environment. The complete supply chain for steel and iron based products will be impacted significantly as a direct result of the potential loss of production. Azovstal iron and steel works include coke production, sinter plant, blast furnace plant consisting of six blast furnaces, steel-making complex in the converter and open-hearth shop, a mill complex in the plate shop, rail and shops and offices included in a large variety of rail and shops bonds.

The steel industry plays a key role for industry in Europe. The sector employs around 300,000 people and has a major impact on the economy. Steel is the raw material in so many other industries, for example construction and automotive, white goods, and electronics. Each job in steel generates an additional eight jobs. The EU is the world’s second largest steel producer after China. The bloc produces about 170 million tons of crude steel a year in more than 500 plants spread across member states. The European steel industry is still a world leader in high-quality specialised products. The loss of this facility is a major blow for our industry and we will be doing all we can to support it.

15th March 2022 - International Trade Visit To Greece

After almost two years of restrictions and the inability to visit customers we were very pleased to visit Greece to undertake a round robin of trade and supply talks with a couple of long standing Trent Refractories customers. The importance of "Made In Britain" and the "Department for International Trade" became very central to our recent visit.

Our trade mission also involved post Brexit realities to try and turn the administration involved to an advantage and build relationships with our clients having also not been able to visit for the last two years with Covid 19. The last two years have been particularly challenging, but we are very confident of export and home trade opportunities across all aspects of our products and services. We spent two days having progressive and productive meetings, which will enable us to build upon the foundations of over 30+ years.

2nd March 2022 - Response to Rising Energy Costs

Over the last few months we have seen our energy bills increase by as much as 700%. In response to this, we are doing all we can to reduce our consumption of energy on site here at Trent Refractories. One area we felt would make an impact was to reline one of our Industrial Ovens. The task has been undertaken by our own team and looks pretty good. Fuel and energy are vital elements for keeping the nation going along with the manufacturing sector.

The British Ceramic Confederation has also commented on the current Gas situation. The British Ceramic Confederation (BCC) needs the UK Government to ease the pressure of high, volatile, and internationally uncompetitive energy and carbon prices on our members. BCC is concerned that in the event of a national gas supply shortfall this winter our members are near the front of the queue to be forced off the gas network and we are still urging the Government to review this immediately.

Dr Laura Cohen, Chief Executive said: “While Government has acted to support domestic consumers with their short-term energy bills, they haven’t done anything yet to help energy-intensive industries such as ceramics. Ceramic manufacturers operate in many areas in need of ‘levelling up’ where they are often the back bone of the local economy. By inaction the government is ‘levelling down’, not ‘levelling up’.

“We remain concerned our international competitiveness is being eroded further on energy and carbon prices and manufacturers are still uncertain about energy security. We need the Government to act now, which would signal to UK manufacturers and their investors that the Government understands how important these businesses, their investment and jobs are to the UK economy both now and in the future.”

Jon Flitney, Energy & Innovation Manager added: “More member companies will become increasingly exposed to the high and volatile energy prices. The increased costs are damaging current and future UK investment, including for decarbonisation, even in factories where production is continuing. The sector is committed to net zero and the Government needs to work with us in partnership to replace gas with hydrogen, bioenergy or electricity.”

BCC and its members continue to feed in the sector’s views and positions to the Government.

11th February 2022 - National Apprenticeship Week 2022

Trent Refractories are celebrating National Apprenticeships Week 2022 which has been running from 7th to 13th February 2022. National Apprenticeship Week 2022 is the 15th annual week-long celebration of apprenticeships. The week brings together businesses and apprentices across the country to shine a light on the positive impact that apprenticeships make to individuals, businesses and the wider economy. The theme for National Apprenticeship Week 2022 will be 'build the future'; reflecting on how apprenticeships can help individuals to develop the skills and knowledge required for a rewarding career, and businesses to develop a talented workforce that is equipped with future-ready skills. 1st February 2022 - New Apprentices At Trent Refractories

We are very excited to announce that we have recruited not one but two apprentices within the business, both joined us in 2021 and have embarked on their degree in Mechanical Engineering - Product Design and Development at Sheffield University.

Over the next few years they will be gaining practical knowledge in the world of refractories, whilst helping us to evolve. This is something we feel very passionate about, as retaining our skills in the UK for such a niche industry is so important for the future and it is all of our responsibilities to ensure they are not lost.

10th January 2022 - VIM Stick Casting Trial

Innovation within our industry sector continues at a rapid rate with new technologies, processes and standards advancing each year. Trent Refractories are starting the year with a case study that demonstrates innovation at the highest levels. Our client has an established process manufacturing large diameter, nickel super-alloy ingots using a Vacuum Induction Melting (VIM) process.

Trent Refractories were invited to participate in a feasibility study investigating manufacture of smaller, diameter sticks by supplying a proto-type catcher box. The project required material development, engineering, design, mould fabrication and external firing to 1000°C. The timescales for delivery were set at three weeks and the collective team delivered the solution allowing for a trial period which was viewed as a success by the client. 1st December 2021 - Seasons Greetings From Trent Refractories

Season’s greetings from all of us and we wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Christmas shutdown dates will see our location closed from Thursday 23rd December 2021, reopening Tuesday 4th January 2022, any last minute orders should be placed now. We would like to thank everyone involved with our company including our employees, customers, suppliers and people who have been involved in projects and related activities.

It has been an interesting year all round for everyone in our business and also globally. Despite the pandemic we have implemented several projects both internally and externally with the company including our going green LED lighting project which was back in march this year. We also completed the purchase of our premises during the year including all offices, manufacturing, storage and testing areas. This is a major step forward as part of our planned investments for the year and into 2022. We look forward to 2022 and wish everyone the very best moving forward.

15th November 2021 - Trent Refractories Supporting The Real Living Wage Scheme

The new Living Wage rates were announced on Monday 15th November 2021. Trent Refractories are supporters of the Real Living Wage scheme which is classed as the only wage rate based on what people need to live in the real world. This equates to £9.90 across the UK and for our location in Scunthorpe. We are proud of our team and all of the people within the company. Together we are Trent Refractories.

10th November 2021 - Made in Britain International Trade

Katy Moss, Managing Director of Trent Refractories was invited to attend a Made in Britain event on 10th November to extol the benefits of being a Made in Britain member to other new members in the organisation and gave a presentation on how it had benefited the company and its activities.

Made in Britain also offers members support in four areas: sales, marketing, exports and comms/PR. Becoming a member entitles a business to a profile page on the Made in Britain Directory alongside all the other makers in 50 product categories. Made in Britain encourages buyers, specifiers and consumers to use the directory as the procurement site for British-made goods.

2nd November 2021 - Trent Refractories Supporting Wadworth Cricket Club

Trent Refractories have recently donated £250 to Wadworth Cricket Club who have a project underway at the cricket ground to raise funds for the installation of an artificial (non turf) wicket and they are looking for help with this. The total cost is £7800.00 so it’s a hefty bill for the club and one we are proud to support.

The club is also applying for funding from Sport England but any help no matter how big or small would go a long way to getting them to their target. This project for the club is to install an artificial (non turf) wicket. This will enable Wadworth CC and its members to train more easily and safely. It will also enable the club to take part in T20 midweek cricket providing more opportunities for people from the local community to represent the village by playing cricket for the club. The cost of the installation of the artificial wicket is £7800.00 including VAT and the club does have fundraising plans in place as well as funding applications to relevant parties.

7th July 2021 - Carbon Emission Reduction With Support From The ERDF

Our business is passionate about the environment! We have taken steps to reduce our energy consumption, lowering our carbon emissions for our loved local community. As a business we have invested in LED lighting and an Air Compressor. This will make a huge difference to the environment and this is just the start of our sustainable journey.

To help us invest in these energy saving measures we had support from Smart Energy Greater Lincolnshire. Through this we received a grant of £9,492.00 to enable us to make these fantastic changes. The £8.5 million Smart Energy programme has been part funded by the European Regional Development fund. This is enabling small to medium businesses across the Greater Lincolnshire area invest in energy saving technology.

The Institute of Refractories Engineers is a not-for-profit trade association that helps our members to access the science, technology and skills they need to excel in the refractory industry. For more than 50 years, The IRE has been a forum for professionals in refractories and related industries. If you design, manufacture, sell, install or study refractories, the IRE is for you. 4th June 2021 - Brian Speight Celebrates 30 Years At Trent Refractories

Last month saw a 30th anniversary at Trent Refractories for one of our team members. We are celebrating our wonderful Brian Speight, who has worked at the company for 30 years. He has literally seen it all! Well done Brian on such a massive achievement.

Brian heads the Production, Loading & Despatch functions at Trent Refractories and has worked for Trent Refractories since he was 15 years old, starting out on a YTS scheme he has learned every aspect of production over the years.

Job Title: Quality & Process Engineer

Objective of the role

To ensure all products and processes meet quality standards, are evaluated and areas for improvements identified and implemented, in all aspects of production. Create engineered drawings for moulds in the production of existing and/or new concrete/or as specified products; monitor, evaluate and improve as required. Receipt and action of all customer orders to inform the Production Plan. Working with suppliers and inventory/goods/supplies, goods in and out. Meticulously recording all data in the company systems (Sage, Excel, Office365). Reports, evaluations, recommendations made at appropriate and as required intervals. Work in synergy with Sales Manager, Production Manager, Laboratory Manager to create an effective quality service at all levels. Work with and improve existing IT based processes, currently Sage50.

• Working to the company’s Health and Safety rules and ensuring compliance

12th April 2021 - Going Green With LED Lighting Across All Areas

Trent Refractories have recently updated 100% of the workspace lighting at our manufacturing facility in Scunthorpe. This has seen all or our production, storage and office space updated and made much lighter, having the benefits of being much greener in energy consumption. LED lighting provides many environmental advantages, including being energy efficient, producing zero toxic elements, requiring less light fixtures, and having a longer life span. LED lights are up to 80% more efficient than fluorescent and incandescent lights.

24th March 2021 - Kickstart Scheme Announced for Trent Refractories

Trent Refractories have been granted the opportunity to have 3 Kickstarter jobs under the scheme (6 month placements) and we are planning to roll out a number of vacancies which will be advertised in due course. The Kickstart Scheme provides funding to employers to create job placements for 16 to 24 year olds on Universal Credit.

2nd February 2021 - Post Brexit Jobs White Paper Focuses On High-Quality Apprenticeships

The UK Government recently published its post brexit strategy for high quality jobs supporting Britain's newfound independent role across a global marketplace. Gavin Williamson CBE MP, Secretary of State for Education stated, "As a result we have a skills gap that is holding us back economically. We do not have enough technicians, engineers or health and social care professionals. Redressing this will be critical to improving our productivity and international competitiveness. This is why we intend to prioritise the courses and qualifications that enable people to get great jobs and which will support our economy to compete with the world’s best."

"Our nation stands at a critical juncture. Like the rest of the world, we continue to deal with the coronavirus pandemic and prepare to recover and rebuild from its aftermath. 21st December 2020 - HSE Inspection Undertaken With A Clean Bill Of Health

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) undertook a general audit of our manufacturing facility covering work related health, safety and illness factors. The health and safety audit provided an expert assessment of our organisation's health and safety policies, systems and procedures which we passed with no improvement notices. As a company we always welcome ideas and ways to improve what we do and this was an excellent opportunity to gain an outside perspective. Thank you to all involved in the process.

15th December 2020 - Record Ladle Lives Campaign At Local Steel Works

Trent Refractories backfill material has contributed to a record ladle lives campaign at a local steel works helping to reach a record 154 heats beating the existing record by 2 heats. Ladle Linings for Foundries are a fantastic service for foundries, you can simply send us your Ladles and we will cast a working lining into it for you, we offer a full service of collection, wrecking, casting, drying and delivery back to your site. Making it easy for you to manage your fleet and offering value for money. We can also advise on casting at your site to enable you to effectively cast your own Ladles, this service is suited where typically smaller ladles are used.

We have a range of backfill materials designed to be used between the safety and working linings to absorb thermal expansion, retard and capture metal penetration and prevent reactions between the slag, working and safety linings. They offer protection whilst also making it easier to remove the working linings. We are also able to develop mixes using our team of experienced technical staff and external R&D support, please just ask and we will be happy to work on something for your needs.

11th December 2020 - Blast Furnace Stove Ready For Export

We are pleased to announce a new contract and project Trent Refractories are working on for a Blast Furnace Stove with a global partner for precast blocks that are now all ready to go to be exported. These specific blocks require attention to detail and we are proud to be making them here in the UK, taking pride in what we do! This represented a bespoke mix, which is new to Trent Refractories and classed as a new engineered "built to order" mix for this application.

10th December 2020 - Christmas Cheer With Gift Hampers

December is here along with the season of goodwill to everyone, after a very difficult year. All at Trent Refractories are looking forward to next year and the challenges it will bring. 8th December 2020 - Three Electric Arc Furnace Delta Roofs Shipped To The USA

Trent Refractories have recently designed, manufactured and delivered three Electric Arc Furnace Delta Roofs to the USA. This export order forms part of our longer term growth strategy for exporting on a global basis and a major attempt to establish a market for the USA for this specific product. This is a second trial of our product for this location and application. We are looking forward to getting the results on performance and longevity from our customer who is very happy with the quality of our Delta Roof and our capabilities in this industry.

Made at our factory in Scunthorpe our EAF Roof Deltas are known and highly respected in the UK market and we hold the record for roof lives at a local steel works, over 1000 heats! The roof can be designed entirely to your specification and have in built air economisers if you so wish. We also produce Economiser rings to compliment the Deltas. We offer a range of castables to suit this purpose and provide best value in use. We also offer the addition of green chrome where specified.

2nd December 2020 - Seasons Greetings From Trent Refractories

Season’s greetings from all of us and we wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Christmas shutdown dates will see our location closed from 22nd December 2020, reopening 4th January 2021, any last minute orders should be placed now. We would like to thank everyone involved with our company including our employees, customers, suppliers and people who have been involved in projects and related activities.

We are finishing the year strongly with a number of projects in place and orders fulfilled. We have shipped 3 roofs to the USA today in an attempt to establish a market for the US, this is a second trial of our product over there. Our backfill material has contributed to a record ladle lives campaign at a local steel works helping to reach a record 154 heats beating the existing record by 2. We have taken advantage of the Smart Energy Grant and will be upgrading our lighting in the factory the week after next. All of these make December a very busy month in a year that has seen significant challenges. More will follow on these stories in due course.

11th November 2020 - Trent Refractories Supporting Remembrance Day

Remembrance Day 2020 will have seen significantly reduced donations in the build up to 11th November 2020 due to the pandemic. In light of this, Trent Refractories and its supply chain have made a combined donation of £100 to the Royal British Legion to support its work for all war veterans. Remembrance Day (sometimes known informally as Poppy Day owing to the tradition of the remembrance poppy) is a memorial day observed in Commonwealth member states since the end of the First World War to remember the members of their armed forces who have died in the line of duty.

9th November 2020 - Living Wage Increased Across The UK To £9.50 Per Hour

Trent Refractories support the real Living Wage campaign across the UK which in November 2020 has increased to £9.50 per hour. The scheme is the only UK wage rate that is voluntarily paid by nearly 7,000 UK businesses who believe their staff deserve a wage which meets everyday needs; the weekly shop, or a surprise trip to the dentist. Employers voluntarily pay the real Living Wage which is above the national legal minimum rate. As well as being good for society, there are significant business benefits to paying the real Living Wage.

The rates for 2020/21 were announced on Monday 9th November 2020. Member employers will implement the rise as soon as possible. The Living Wage Foundation grew out of the Living Wage Campaign which originated in London. The campaign was launched in 2001 by members of London Citizens, a community organisation which subsequently developed into the nationwide community organising institution Citizens UK. The Living Wage Campaign called for every worker in the country to earn enough to provide their family with the essentials of life.

3rd November 2020 - Operational Update From Trent Refractories

New national restrictions are coming into force from 5th November 2020 as England goes into a second lockdown period. To help contain the virus, everyone who can work effectively from home must do so. Where people cannot do so (for instance people who work in critical national infrastructure, construction or manufacturing) they should continue to travel to work/attend their workplace. This is essential to keeping the country operating and supporting vital sectors and employers.

Trent Refractories are operating throughout the lockdown as normal and have systems in place to be able to work from home if required. We want to reassure our customer base that Trent Refractories and its supply chain is fully prepared to fulfil all orders and process new business enquiries that arise over the next month. 2nd July 2020 - 40 New Jobs Announced At British Steel's Scunthorpe Site

In a significant boost to the local economy in Scunthorpe during the current pandemic, major refractory product user British Steel, is looking to recruit Manufacturing Trainees at the steelworks plant. A spokesperson for British Steel said: "We’re currently recruiting up to 40 Manufacturing Trainees to work at our integrated steelworks site in Scunthorpe. The successful candidates will undertake a structured training programme, leading to a professional qualification and the chance to secure a permanent role with us."

They are looking for highly motivated and enthusiastic individuals to join their varied and diverse teams across the Scunthorpe site. For shift-based roles (including weekend working), you’ll need to be aged 18 years or over in order to satisfy the necessary legal requirements. You must have achieved either GCSE maths and English language to a minimum of grade C or Functional Skills level 2 in English and maths with a good all-round education. This is a fantastic programme for individuals who want to work within the steel industry gaining relevant training and experience to meet individual and business needs.

5th June 2020 - Refractory Bricks In The Spotlight

Basic Magnesite bricks are one of the most widely used basic refractory bricks, we can help you choose the right brick for your application. Alumina bricks are great for performing at high temperatures and have excellent corrosion and wear resistance, a high bulk density and low iron content. Call our sales team for the best price and availability for your refractory bricks.

Fired Magnesia - These bricks fired at high temperatures are volume stable in use. They show good corrosion & chemical resistance and can be fired at various temperatures.

Magnesia Carbon - Magnesia Carbon bricks are produced with non-fired basic refractory material. Resin bonded. Improves corrosion and slag resistance whilst adding graphite. They have excellent corrosion resistance together with good thermal shock properties. These bricks are widely used in EAF’s Ladles and relining furnaces.

Magnesia Chrome - Magnesia Chrome bricks are made from high purity magnesia and chrome. The bricks perform well at high temperatures and have good thermal stability. Magnesia chrome bricks are mostly commonly used in cement kilns and non-ferrous furnaces.

Alumina Bricks - Great for performing at high temperatures and have excellent corrosion and wear resistance, a high bulk density and low iron content. They are used in all kinds of industrial furnaces and high temperature applications to improve furnace lives. We can provide fire bricks with varying levels of Alumina content from 40% up to 90%.

11th May 2020 - Trent Refractories Will Be Having a 3 Week Partial Shutdown

From 11th May, Trent Refractories will be having a partial shutdown for a period of 3 weeks. During this time there will be a limited team operating and the office will be on reduced hours. 3rd April 2020 - Operational Update for Coronavirus COVID 19 & Trent Refractories

Trent Refractories are a major critical supplier in the melting and producing of steel, as such, we will continue to support our industry in any way we can. We are forward planning for our customers and building stock to enable melting to continue should further restrictions be imposed. For our staff we have already put measures in place by communicating with them, they are aware that PPE may be required when working closer together (more so than normal). Some of our staff are also working from home.

We would like to point out that any supplier that provides goods or service to us would also be deemed critical and urge them where possible to provide a service to us and other critical customers, we are seeing too many businesses misinterpret the information in the media and closing without realising they are needed and have this week managed to persuade two companies to remain open.

20th March 2020 - UPDATED Coronavirus / COVID-19 Statement 20/03/2020

6th March 2020 - Thank You for 22 Years James Whitelam at Trent Refractories

James Whitelam left the team after 22 years of service, he started at Trent when he was just 18 years old and spent many years operating our Monolithic production. In recent years he undertook a course in Supervision at the AMRC in Sheffield and stepped up into the role of team leader most recently. James was an incredibly dedicated member of the team and we wish him all the best in doing that and maybe one day he will return to our team. James has always been a committed member of the team and we all think so much of him. He will be missed.

21st February 2020 - Electric Arc Furnace Roofs Supplied To The Entire UK Market

Trent has a long and notable history in supplying precast refractory shapes specifically with EAF Roof Deltas so much so that we supply the entire UK market. Our team has worked with us for many years and understands the demands placed on our products from hands on practical experience. At Trent we can cast anything from just a few kilos all the way up to 20 tonnes.

In the Electric Arc Furnace, scrap metal is melted using an electrical and chemical process. An Electric Arc Furnace can reach temperatures in excess of 1700 degrees. Trent Refractories have solutions to meet the demands for each type of furnace.

Our precast EAF Roofs and deltas replaced older Electric Arc Furnace Roof technology where they built out of Silica, and then High Alumina bricks. It was found to be a better performer and also improved risks associated with the brick roofs cracking and falling into the furnace, which was quite a common occurrence. Trent not only made EAF Roofs safer, but use a unique material which is cost effective and gives greater service life.

Monolithics are made at our facility here in Scunthorpe, where we blend and bag all of our products in house. Our main products are very highly regarded in the industry as giving excellent performance and value in use. 27th November 2019 - Trent Refractories Attend the Backing Britain Campaign in Sheffield

Representatives from Trent Refractories will be attending the "Backing Britain" event on Friday 29th November at Outokumpu Stainless, Europa Link, Sheffield S9 1TZ. Made in Yorkshire is launching a brand new, year-long campaign designed to act as a beacon of unity, and to restore confidence in Britain.

The event will include presentations from industry leaders on how manufacturers across the nation can promote British industry to safeguard its future and create a lasting legacy. Also after the event a factory tour will be available. 15th November 2019 - Trent Refractories MD Katy Moss Becomes IRE President

Today was the Institute of Refractory Engineers conference which was all about the Petrochemical industry. Katy Moss took the reins of President for the next two years and gave Fellow Membership to Jan Theron the outgoing President.

Katy stated “Three things I want to be known for in my presidency. Sustainability, engagement and relevance. My aim is to ensure the IRE is here to support the technical refractory community for future generations, engage more with our members and provide them with relevant information to grow personally and professionally.” Taking the presidency marks 40 years since her late father was also Vice President, he was a keen supporter of the Institute.

Members of Trent Refractories recently visited the 62nd International Colloquium on Refractories (ICR) 2019 in Aachen, Germany over the last week in September. Topics included, Raw materials, Processing technology, Energy, Logistics, Refractory lining Service, Environmental Protection, Product liability, Quality Management, Industry 4.0, R & l programs & activities and Legislation.

The 62nd ICR and ECREF were proud to present the IMP³rove - European Innovation Management Academy as an important cooperation partner this year. The IMP³rove Academy offers public and private organisations support in innovation management through assessment, training and consulting services. Our experiences demonstrate that innovation is manageable rather than a result of purely accidental circumstances. 3rd September 2019 - Gunning Our Material Onto A VAD Lid

One of the largest products we manufacture is the VAD Lid (Vacuum Arc Degasser) which is deployed within the refractory process and production of molten steel. In the steel smelting process, unwanted gasses are dissolved in the molten liquid, which could produce any number of imperfections and defects. Our VAD lids can be refurbished by the gunning material process as demonstrated in the image.

Vacuum Oxygen Decarburisation and Vacuum Arc Degasser lids form part of our large precast expertise, these are some of the largest items we cast and perform like our EAF Deltas. 1st August 2019 - 30 Years Celebrated For Trent Refractories In New Timeline

2019 sees Trent Refractories celebrate 30 years in business providing refractory products to industry around the world. We have created a new timeline presentation which can be found on the website in the Timeline page which is part of the Home section. We were founded on 10th March 1989.

Back in early March 1989 Jason Donovan was at number 1 in the UK top 40 charts with "Too Many Broken Hearts". In the cinema "Rain Man" with Dustin Hoffman and Tom Cruise was the number 1 film at the box office closely followed by Dangerous Liaisons. Margaret Thatcher was Prime Minister in the UK, with newly elected President George H. W. Bush in office in the USA. The Iron Curtain was starting its last few months as the end of communism in Europe was coming to a conclusion and the European Union was called the European Community.

25th July 2019 - Race Day Success In The Trent Refractories Novice Stakes

We held our annual networking event at Doncaster Race Course on Thursday 25th July 2019 which also coincided with the hottest day of the year so far with temperatures in excess of 35°C. On an action packed afternoon and evening we held our networking event with customers, suppliers staff and partners all enjoying six races including the Trent Refractories Novice Stakes which was our sponsored race.

The race had eight runners over 7 furlongs 6 yards with the going good to firm. The winner received a cheque for just under £4500 being Valdermoro trained by Richard Fahey and ridden by Tony Hamilton with a winning time of 1 minute 25 seconds who tracked the leaders, went 2nd over 2 furlongs out, led over 1 furlong out, clear inside final furlong. We would like to thank everyone involved and all who attended the event.

15th July 2019 - Trentdam Vy-Ops Vanishing Yield Optimisation Plate System

This is a piece of precast with a plate submerged within it that is designed to melt out during the casting process, through a tundish. The piece allows metal that would normally cool and go solid in the base of the tundish to drain to a much lower level thus increasing the yield of every cast and reducing the amount of re-worked steel – energy and efficiency savings all round.

2nd July 2019 - Trent Refractories Race Day Announced

We are hosting an evening at Doncaster Races on Thursday 25th July 2019 for our annual evening of networking and racing at Doncaster Racecourse. It has now become a tradition to invite a host of people from inside and outside our company. 5th June 2019 - Sky News Visit Our Manufacturing Facility In Scunthorpe

In light of the recent news relating to British Steel, we had a visit from Sky News who spent the day onsite at our modern manufacturing facility in Scunthorpe right next door to the British Steel Works site. British Steel was placed into compulsory liquidation on 22 May, putting 5,000 jobs at risk and endangering 20,000 in the supply chain. Sky News came to our location to create a 3 minute article on what it means to be part of the supply chain within this industry.

2nd May 2019 - Making Way For the All New Small Precast Product Range

A number of inward investment projects are underway at Trent Refractories during 2019 where we will be developing production zones across the manufacturing facility at our Scunthorpe location. More news updates will be provided during the year on these projects to allow for an increase in product lines and also an increase in capacities. 5th April 2019 - 3D Models Printed To Scale For Precast Products

Trent Refractories are pleased to now offer 3D printed models for Precast products allowing for complete visualisation before any production process begins. Trent has a long and notable history in supplying precast refractory shapes specifically with EAF Roof Delta’s so much so that we supply the entire UK market. 3D printed models created with CAD result in reduced errors and can be corrected before printing, allowing verification in the design of the object before it is printed. The manual modelling process of preparing geometric data for 3D computer graphics is similar to plastic arts such as sculpting. Today, the precision, repeatability and material range have increased to the point that 3D printing is considered as an industrial production technology, with the name of additive manufacturing. 3D printed objects can have a very complex shape or geometry and are always produced starting from a digital 3D model or a CAD file.

2nd April 2019 - Trent Refractories Visits The Concrete Show 2019

The whole of the concrete industry gathered under one roof at the NEC in Birmingham recently to present the very best in the UK Concrete industry. Innovation is vital for the industry and Trent Refractories to service customers on a global basis and this was very much in evidence at the show. New technologies were being exhibited for mixers, pumps, mix adhesives, bagging, packing, smart technology and a full range of handling machinery.

Trent Refractories are always looking at new investments and we have just introduced new testing capabilities in the laboratory where we can test for porosity, displacement density and apparent specific gravity with further investment being done to increase our capabilities. 5th March 2019 - Trent Refractories Secures £350,000 Order

Trent Refractories has secured a £350,000 contract, supporting job creation at its factory in Scunthorpe. The company is supplying its bespoke refractory shapes for use in the steel-making process. The contract is expected to lead to an 8 per cent increase in turnover for the business and has support the creation of up to eight new jobs at its Scunthorpe factory.

Trent Refractories, a member of manufacturing organisation Made in Britain, has been manufacturing in the UK since 1989. The provenance of its products played an integral part in securing the contract. Katy Moss, Managing Director of Trent Refractories, said:

28th November 2018 - The Amazon Growing Business Awards Finals Event

Trent refractories Managing Director Katy Moss presented the Award for Family Business of the Year. Real Business hosted the “growing business awards” with the incredible Sally Phillips. The award went to Food Attraction. Keep an eye out for their microwaveable Naan by Jake and Nayns. They plan to disrupt the Ginsters market so we will see how this one develops.

22nd November 2018 - Trent Refractories Awarded ISO 9001:2015 Accreditation

Trent Refractories is pleased to announce that we have had our Integrated Management System (QMS) successfully audited and awarded the ISO 9001:2015 standard for the manufacture and supply of bespoke refractory solutions. This new standard builds on our previous accreditation being ISO 9001:2008 standard. The new standard allows for support, operation, performance evaluation and improvement process to be a core aspect of the QMS.

Our quality management system standards are designed to help ensure that we meet the needs of our customers and other stakeholders related to our core business activities and the fundamentals of a quality management system. ISO 9001 is the international standard that specifies requirements for a quality management system (QMS). Exactly 40 years after Trent Refractories founder and Katy's late father Bob was also in the same role, Katy Moss has been made Senior Vice President of The Institute of Refractory Engineers. 1st November 2018 - Meet The Trent Refractories Team

Trent Refractories has assembled a team of industry experts over the last few years. We are proud of our achievements in getting the very best people to work with together in the business. The combined team works at all levels and aspects of the business covering both strategic and operational activities. Our current focus is on research and development moving into 2019 with staff innovations.

We have recently added our three team leaders to our meet the team page on our website as recognition to the role that they play in our manufacturing facility in Scunthorpe.

Vincent Dunderdale - Vinnie has been with us for almost a quarter of a century working in our large precast division and heads up this area now for the company, he has a lot of ideas for improvements in his new role.

James Whitelam - Joined Trent when he was just 18 years old and is an incredibly dedicated member of the team. James is about to embark on an ILM level 3 course in Supervision at the AMRC in Sheffield.

Martin Ireland - One of the newest members of the team, he has shown initiative and spark which has meant we felt confident to present him with this opportunity to lead the Small Precast team.

Trent Refractories Managing Director Katy Moss will be part of the judging team for this years’ Amazon Growing Business Awards in London on 15th October 2018. The Amazon Growing Business Awards will be held for the third year at the Brewery’s famous Porter Tun room, one of the largest and oldest unobstructed vent spaces in London. Re-designing The Furnace - Working with a company in Europe we worked closely with them to redesign the configuration of their furnace so that the installation was sped up for the labourers. We drew the furnace design for the customer and calculated the configuration of bricks to make the turn in the furnace with the most minimal of brick cuts.

2nd July 2018 - Introducing The Complete EAF Solution

Trent refractories is please to present our complete EAF Solution as presented on our new web page here. In the Electric Arc Furnace, scrap metal is melted using an electrical and chemical process. An Electric Arc Furnace can reach temperatures in excess of 1,700 degrees and Trent Refractories have the solution to meet the demands for each type of furnace.

Precast EAF Roofs - Our precast EAF Roofs and deltas replaced older Electric Arc Furnace Roof technology where they built out of Silica, and then High Alumina bricks. It was found to be a better performer and also improved risks associated with the brick roofs cracking and falling into the furnace, which was quite a common occurrence. Trent not only made EAF Roofs safer, but use a unique material which is cost effective and gives greater service life.

EAF Launders - We can create a Launder to your design enabling efficient targeted tapping from your furnace with excellent wear capabilities. A precast monolithic runner which forms a spout extending from the taphole to enable molten steel to flow into the ladle. Higher strength and more thermally shock resistant than Magnesite runners.

EAF Ramming - We have a range of Alumina and Basic ramming materials to suit various applications for the furnace. Basic rammings of various grades are available for the hearths, and Alumina rammings for furnace repairs.

EAF Gunning - We have a range of Alumina and Basic gunning materials to suit various applications for the walls of the furnace. We also produce a specialist gunning material which is beneficial to the ferrochrome making process. We are also able to develop mixes using our team of experienced technical staff and external R&D support, please just ask and we will be happy to work on something for your needs.

EAF Bricks - We can supply any type of brick to a specific size to your needs, we keep a small stock of standard sizes at our facility in Scunthorpe also. The lead time on special orders is typically 16 to 20 weeks from ordering.

12th June 2018 - James Whitelam Starting ILM Level 3 Certificate In Leadership & Management

James Whitelam who has worked for us for 20 years is going to be attending this course which is held over 9 months at the AMRC in Sheffield. The ILM Level 3 Certificate in Leadership & Management gives a broad understanding of leadership principles through eight modules, which include developing and creating a high performing team, getting the best out of people and maximising materials. The course will also see guest speakers and there will be optional industry visits to showcase best practice.

James will gain a range of management skills that he will put into practice in his own role. By building his own leadership capabilities he will be able to motivate and engage teams and manage relationships with confidence.

26th May 2018 - Trent Refractories Celebrates Over 25 Years Of Brian Speight

Trent Refractories celebrates Brian Speight who has worked for us since he was a mere 15 years old, having done every job in the factory he is a senior member of the team, he enjoys spending time in his caravan with his wife Elaine and young son. Brian started on a YTS scheme and has been at Trent Refractories for over 25 years which is an amazing achievement.

26th May 2018 - Trent Refractories Is In Attendance At The 2018 Festival Of Ideas

This is the 20th Anniversary of the Growing Business Awards alumni event. Katy Moss was in attendance for a day of debate, networking and celebration at The Brewery in London as the VIP chair at the 20th Anniversary Celebration and Festival of Ideas being hosted on May 22nd 2018 to celebrate two decades of the Amazon Growing Business Awards. The event brought together over 120 of former winners and finalists for an afternoon of interactive debate followed by a discussion evening.

Tanya Beckett, of the BBC, interviewed a small number of the biggest names to emerge from the awards to kick off the afternoon. All guests participated in a series of roundtable debates focused on topics including how to put together a team fit for the future, the future of sales and marketing, international growth and the impact of technology. All participants took part in all of these debates and a number of the alumni were asked to chair a table including Katy Moss from Trent Refractories. Tanya Beckett called on a couple of the chairs following each of the discussions, to give their headline feedback on what was discussed by their group. Speakers on the day included Rob Law of Trunki, Rebecca Mayhew of Go Ape, Rami Ranger from Sun Mark, Simon Duffy from Bulldog and many others.

1st May 2018 - Increased Workload Leads To Double Shifting

Due to a significant take up on recent orders for our range of Monolithic products we have now moved to a two-shift system in our manufacturing facility. Growth has been seen in precast products and refractory bricks, but the biggest uptake has been in our range of monolithics including conventional castables, low cement castables, ultralow castables, lightweight castables, Ramming Materials, backfill materials, gunning materials and joining cement.

Our ladies at Trent Refractories are superstars and we wouldn’t be who we are today without their perseverance and conscientious attitudes. Thank you ladies. The theme for International Women's Day 2018 was chosen as - 'Time is Now: Rural and urban activists transforming women’s lives'.

While the first observance of a Women's Day was held on February 28, 1909 in New York, March 8 was suggested by the 1910 International Socialist Woman's Conference to become an "International Woman's Day." After women gained suffrage in Soviet Russia in 1917, March 8 became a national holiday there. The day was then predominantly celebrated by the socialist movement and communist countries until it was adopted in 1975 by the United Nations.

1st February 2018 - British Steel To Recruit Over 100 New Manufacturing Trainees

124 manufacturing trainees are being recruited by British Steel in Scunthorpe. 60 of the appointments have already been made – half of who started work in December 2017 and half have joined in January 2018. The company is now looking to find an additional 64 manufacturing trainees who’ll also be trained to perform roles including crane driving, fork lift truck driving and machine operations.

British Steel deputy CEO Paul Martin said: “We’re delighted to continue recruiting, underlining our commitment to investing in our people, our products and our future. These are excellent jobs, offering successful applicants first-class training and career prospects along with a good wage.

“Earlier this year we started recruiting this site’s first manufacturing trainees in a decade and they’re already making a significant contribution to our business. I’d like to welcome our new employees to the business and look forward to more people joining us in the coming weeks and months.”

1st December 2017 - Electric Arc Furnace Roof Exported To Bangladesh

Electric Arc Furnace Roofs in the last week we are really proud to announce that we are sending out our furthest reaching EAF roof ever. Having worked with the company over the last few months, we have helped them refine the design of their existing roof to alleviate water leak problems on the furnace and ultimately make them more efficient.

We are really excited to hear of the results and feedback in the coming weeks. Back in the early 1990’s Trent pioneered the use of a chrome based material in the refractory industry for making precast EAF Roofs and Deltas, we continue to use and develop this technology today. 8th November 2017 - Trent Refractories Attend The IRE Silver Linings Conference

Trent Refractories has been in attendance at the Institute of Refractory Engineers Silver Linings Conference being held at the Tankersley Manor conference centre near Barnsley in the UK. This is the tenth annual training conference day organised by the IRE, this year will focus on the design of monolithic linings.

The conference is aimed at people who work with monolithic refractories but need to enhance their knowledge of lining design. The conference also aims to provide an introduction into issues concerning the engineering design of a monolithic lining including, Designing and selection of anchors, anchor installation and spacing, fibre reinforcement, design around nozzles, flanges and connections, formwork and vibration, thermal expansion, dry out and warm up.

For more than fifty years the Institute of Refractories Engineers has served as a forum for professionals in the refractories, raw materials, manufacturing, installation and user industries. Based in the UK, the Institute of Refractories Engineers (I.R.E.) is the only organisation specifically dedicated to fostering the science, technology and skills of refractories engineering and to serving the needs of refractories engineers worldwide.

2nd October 2017 - A Big Thank You To Our Graduate Placement James Bromley

We are really pleased to have had our graduate placement with us over the summer helping us across the whole company. Undergraduate James Bromley recently went back to University to continue with his Material Science degree at Sheffield. We have thoroughly enjoyed having him over summer and I'm sure we won't have seen the last of him.

The Materials Science and Engineering course is a core degree and is accredited by the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3). Trent Refractories see great value in a degree of this nature. James will be studying a three-year BEng and may complete a four-year MEng degree. The degree is giving a solid grounding in the science of materials and will be of great benefit to James applying his knowledge to materials and engineering problems in the real world. He is looking forward to learning and putting into practice his skills to tailor the structure, composition and processing of materials to meet challenging design requirements.

21st August 2017 - Trent Refractories Summer Placement Visits UK Furnace Plant

During August 2017 one of our summer placements went along with company representatives to one of our UK based customers. Undergraduate James Bromley was given a close up tour of the furnace plant to see our products in action. The images offer an insight into where our Electric Arc Furnace Delta Roofs are installed and the type of environment that they operate in. James is doing a degree in Metallurgy and was very impressed by the actual industrial process and the application of our products. Metallurgy is the study of metals and this is a perfect experience for our summer placement at Trent Refractories.

Trent has a long and notable history in supplying precast refractory shapes specifically with EAF Roof Delta’s so much so that we supply the entire UK market. Our team has worked with us for many years and understands the demands placed on our products from hands on practical experience. At Trent we can cast anything from just a few kilos all the way up to 20 tonnes.

We caught up with Katy Moss from Trent Refractories on winning an Amazon Growing Business Award in 2016.

What does it mean to you as a company to have won the Triumph over Adversity award?

It was really humbling to receive the award. When you read about the calibre of applicants who are in your category it makes you stop and take stock of what you are doing. I think for the business it is a great thing as it raises the profile of the business and makes your competitors heads turn. My hope is that it has put my business back on the map.

How has winning your award impacted Trent Refractories?

Winning the award, I believe has changed the perception about the company from the outside world. When we receive enquiries, people comment about it and say they get a warm feeling about doing business with us. I believe it does set us apart from our competitors.

What would you say to similar companies who are deciding whether to enter this year?

If people are considering entering then they should make the time and do it, even to be nominated is a wonderful experience in itself. The awards night is a great opportunity to network and to bring your team together. How many opportunities like this do you get in your life to do something great?

Our MD Katy Moss has been called upon to judge the First Woman of Engineering and Manufacturing Award this year. After winning the award herself last year, Katy has been inspired by the women she has met through the events that have followed and was honoured to be able to judge this category. 27th January 2017 - Overcoming Adversity - A Business Kept Afloat During A Grieving Process

This is taken from a recent article in the online magazine Real Business, "Katy Moss had a huge challenge to contend with in 2011 - keep her father's business afloat after he passed away. Here she tells her story of overcoming adversity."

When Katy Moss had to step in to keep her father’s refractory business afloat after he died, she ultimately managed to make a success of it despite her adverse circumstances. Her story of overcoming adversity is truly inspiring. Trent Refractories is one of the few remaining refractory producers in the UK. It blends and mixes its own materials on-site, which are then sold in bags. "Trent Refractories was started by my late father, he had spent his life’s work up until that point in steelmaking, specialising in metallurgy and refractories," said Moss," she said. "In the early 1980s he sold his previous company to Steetley, which later became part of Lafarge. Having spent a few years doing other things, he was naturally drawn back to what he did best - so decided to start a new company."

Recently, Moss won the Amazon Growing Business Award for overcoming adversity and it couldn’t be more deserved. When her father passed away, she stepped up to steer the business in very testing emotional and financial times. "Prior to my late father passing I worked happily in school business management. He was trying to sell the business prior to his death. When he passed, I was left as executor with my mother and was advised to go into the company to understand it and facilitate a sale," she explained.

Putting her new job on hold, going in to a company where staff were unsettled, and trying to understand an industry she knew little about was tough. As no sale seemed forthcoming, and Moss started spending more and more time at the company. "In July 2013, I decided to quit my other job all together and make a real go of the company, I went on courses about our customers processes and really took a greater interest in everything we did, asking lots of questions." In September of that year, Moss’ mother called her with breathing difficulties. She rushed round, but her mother collapsed and couldn’t be resuscitated.

"I think I went numb inside and couldn’t consider grieving. People deal with grief differently, I throw myself at things. Desperately wanting to ensure that everyone’s futures were safe I set about focusing on the targets we had just set and being more determined to make it work." Even when she fell pregnant, Moss worked all the way through. After giving birth to her daughter, she was back in work three weeks later as her sales manager left.

Despite these extremely trying conditions, Moss has been successful in overcoming adversity and made it work. She said: "The market in which we operate is shrinking, prices were going up, credit control was poor, our customers (predominantly steel works) would not accept any increases, margins were sliding, there was only one way this was going. I had to have some very difficult discussions with people going against what people said could be done and I managed to get us back on track."

"Despite losing turnover because the UK steel market just aren’t making the volumes they were, we are ok." For Moss, the most challenging thing about taking on the company has been the resistance to change, and trying to make people feel unthreatened by new ways of doing things. Her ovation was one of the most rousing to be given at the 2016 Amazon Growing Business Awards, when she was also joined on stage by joint-winner Jeff Paterson, co-founder of Fourex. Like Paterson’s battle with cancer, Moss has shown incredible resilience in overcoming adversity and re-built a business through grit and determination.

She has also had to overcome her own insecurities to achieve success. The most helpful piece of advice she received, from her late mother, was to be confident in her abilities and not put herself down. "Never give up, if you want something make it happen, sometimes people say no because they either don’t know or can’t be bothered to find out, but generally there is always a way. Be determined and find it!"

1st November 2016 - Living Wage Week At Trent Refractories

Living Wage Week takes place each year during the first week of November. This year Living Wage Week runs from Sunday 30th October to Saturday 5th November. The new independently-calculated UK and London Living Wage rates are announced every year on the Monday. The UK rate is announced simultaneously in cities around the country whilst the London rate is announced by the Mayor of London. Trent Refractories is proud to be part of this initiative.

Celebrating You! 120,000 workers given a pay rise, nearly 3,000 accredited employers and the real Living Wage rates! The week is a UK-wide celebration of the Living Wage movement. It is a great opportunity to raise awareness of the need for a real Living Wage that meets the cost of living and celebrate responsible employers that commit to ensuring their staff earn a wage they can live on. The week sees employers all across the country celebrating their role in the movement publicly. The Foundation holds events, organises media activities and shares new research about the impact of low pay.

17th October 2016 - Trent Refractories MD Nominated For Year’s Amazon Growing Business Awards

This year’s Amazon Growing Business Awards, hosted by Real Business and supported by the CBI will see Trent refractories nominated as a finalists for The Triumph Over Adversity Award! The quantity of high calibre nominations that they have received is phenomenal! We attended a judging day which took place on Monday 17th October 2016 at Grosvenor House Hotel in London.

13th October 2016 - Trent Refractories At The Institute Of Refractory Engineers

Trent Refractories attended The Institute of Refractories Engineers annual Conference and Training Day 2016 at Tankersley Manor, Church Lane, Tankersley, Barnsley in South Yorkshire. The Institute is a non-profit making body and the entire income and property of the Institute is applied towards the promotion of its objectives.

The Institute of Refractories Engineers Conference and Training Day 2016 included a full session Heat Flow and Thermal Expansion Refractory materials are used to provide containment for high temperature processes. An understanding of how heat flows through a refractory lining and the thermal expansion of the refractory lining is critical to safe and effective design and operation of process plant. This course will provide a working knowledge of the calculation of thermal gradients and thermal expansion a allowances and is aimed at personnel who design linings and select and specify materials of construction.

7th October 2016 - The Living Wage in SMEs - Opportunities, Challenges and Future Practice Event

We were delighted to attend a Living Wage event on 7th October at Friends House, 173-177 Euston Road, London. The event was titled “The Living Wage in SMEs: Opportunities, Challenges and Future Practice” and we discussed the findings of new research into the experience of Living Wage adoption in small and medium-sized businesses with practitioners, industry bodies, civil society representatives, academics and policy maker.

By paying the real Living Wage employers are voluntarily taking a stand to ensure their employees can earn a wage which is enough to live on. That basic fairness is at the heart of what our campaign is trying to achieve and why great businesses and organisations choose to go further than the government minimum. Trent Refractories places the Living Wage scheme as part of its ethos and vision for the future to ensure a fair society for all.

22nd September 2016 - Trent Refractories At The 7th International Symposium In China

Trent Refractories attended the 7th International Symposium on Refractories (ISR 2016), organized by The Chinese Society for Metals, the Chinese Ceramic Society and Sinosteel Luoyang Institute of Refractories Research Co., Ltd. will be held in Xi’an, China on Sept. 20-22, 2016.

International Symposium on Refractories (ISR) is a serial international conference and has been held six times successfully: the 1st (ISR 1988) in Hangzhou, the 2nd (ISR 1992) in Beijing, the 3rd (ISR 1998) in Beijing, the 4th (ISR 2003) in Dalian, the 5th (ISR 2007) in Beijing and the 6th (ISR 2012) in Zhengzhou.

ISR 2016 will provide a good opportunity for researchers, manufacturers, suppliers and users around the world to review the progress and achievements made in recent years, to assess new developments in refractories research, production and application and to promote further international exchanges and cooperation. 7th September 2016 - Katy Moss, First Women in their Working Party held at the Haymarket Hotel

Yesterday, Katy Moss had been in London starting work with the First Women in their Working Party held at the Haymarket Hotel. They had been discussing /debating issues surrounding women in business such as – how to encourage women into STEM roles, how to get men involved in the diversity debate, innovative employment strategies that support diversity and creating the female leaders of tomorrow.

1st September 2016 - Interview with First Women of Engineering and Manufacturing, Katy Moss

Before winning the Engineering and Manufacturing award, Katy Moss began her career finance aged 16 as a management trainee at HSBC Bank. At 21 years old, she undertook an accounting course at a night school and obtained a job as a Finance officer at the institution after she qualified. Before she knew it she was a lead school business manager responsible for 11 schools, tasked with assisting in procurement and helping schools share best practices.

Sadly, around the time of getting that the role her late father became very ill and died in shortly after in April 2011. While he was alive, he had tried to negotiate a sale of the business so as not to leave Moss and her mother burdened after he passed. As the executors of his estate, Moss and her mother were advised to go into the business to understand it, and then dispose of it. The period that followed was very difficult, Moss says.

She explains: “A sale was not forthcoming and what could a 28-year-old girl add to the business that others couldn’t. Most of the staff had known me from being a child so it must have been hard to accept and listen to me. All I knew was that we all wanted the company to succeed and that this common goal was what needed to be the main focus as anything else was just a distraction from moving on."

The business lost a few people along the way but it was then able to move in the right direction. After a couple of years, Moss moved on from her role at the school, it was a pivotal point for in her career.

"Going from banking and business management of a school was a shock but actually the skills I had acquired there were very transferrable,” Moss says. “What I lacked was knowledge about our specialist industry – the engineering of the products and then physically making them."

Disaster struck again when Moss’s mother suddenly passed away. Amongst it all Moss and her husband built their home and had a baby 18 months ago.

"It has been and continues to be a near vertical learning curve, hearing about products which are named such rude things too, She says. "What has been great are the people along the way who have taken time out of their days to show me their processes, where our products go, why they are critical, what makes them great."

19th August 2016 - Scunthorpe Telegraph - A Happy Ending To A Tragic Tale From Trent

FIVE years on from inheriting the managing director's chair of the family business in tragic circumstances, Katy Moss is celebrating being named First Woman of Engineering and Manufacturing. The Trent Refractories boss won through in the most hotly contested category at the First Women Awards, and was crowned at the Lancaster Hotel in London.

Backed by the CBI, it underlined an emotional journey that began with the death of her father as negotiations to sell the 27-year-old northern Lincolnshire business she was not even then part of were underway.

The loss of Robert 'Bob' Crossland led to a kitchen table re-think, and with interest rates at a record low, a decision was made between mother and daughter to forge on, rather than bank any accepted offer. "My mother was left behind and she felt it was easier for what she wanted to achieve for the business to keep going rather than putting any sale proceeds in the bank," she said. "I committed to running the business and we decided not to sell."

So began a "near vertical learning curve" recognised this summer. Mrs Moss, with a young daughter, rose to the challenge, keeping a steady workforce of 14 at the Queensway Industrial Estate base in the shadows of Scunthorpe's iconic steel works. Without any knowledge of the refractory products or running a manufacturing company, she set herself the mandate to secure the jobs of her employees and run the company on behalf of the family. Describing the "tireless work to provide a stable future," she said: "It was a tough time for our family and I had a near vertical learning curve whilst also juggling my other career initially, being only 29 at the time it was difficult bringing people on board."

Mrs Moss was working a day a week for HSBC on the management trainee scheme, and having upskilled following the birth of her daughter, she had just been promoted to business manager for an 11 school academy based at Retford, on the Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire border, when her dad was cruelly taken. "When he died, me coming in was just supposed to be a temporary thing," Mrs Moss said. "I was there to understand the sale, so I put my job on hold to try and gain enough information."

The rest is history, leading to the win, all the more poignant, as it came as National Women in Engineering Day was celebrated. "It was a wow moment. Just to be nominated and shortlisted was an amazing experience but it has made me reflect on the last five years and I feel proud and honoured, it is nice to be recognised by others, and it was also nice to be able to have my 12 year old daughter at the event as I hope seeing and meeting such strong inspirational women gives her drive and belief in herself to forge her own future."

Mrs Moss now plans to try and grow the business further in a challenging market. From Menesha Way, Trent supplies the major players in the steel industry in the Sheffield, Rotherham and Scunthorpe area – where the business has been based since it began in 1989 – with heat resistant materials to line furnaces. Out of 134 similar companies, less than a handful have female managing directors, with far less of those actually producing refractory materials like the £ turnover business.

Katy believes a fresh approach has enabled the company to move forward. "I try to engage with people on all levels and make them feel part of the bigger picture, helping them realise they can affect the outcome of everything they do. Integrity, honesty and openness are important to me," said the Yorkshire and Humber Living Wage Award winner of 2015.

She is also proud of the British made products, believing it gives the edge when it comes to quality. Of the recent EU Referendum decision, she said: “I think we need to accept the result and get to work on securing our future as an independent country, focusing on the right negotiations that are going to help us be competitive and fuel our exports."

"Britain has a history steeped in steel-making and can produce exceptional products which cannot be rivalled anywhere in terms of quality. We have done an excellent job with locally produced food and British meat but we need to try and think about everything we buy and make ethical and considered decisions that secure the future of our country."

She pipped leading figures from National Grid, Schneider Electric and the Royal Academy of Engineering to the title. Hosted by Canadian comedian Katherine Ryan, the 2016 First Women Awards produced another stellar crop of inspirational winners, now in its 12th year.

Previous recipients have included Dame Mary Perkins, founder of Specsavers, Thea Green, founder of Nails Inc, and corporate leaders such as BP’s Angela Strank. Trent was this year on the podium with First Capital, Golin, Kiddylicious and Dell.

3rd November 2015 - Katy Moss announced as the winner of the Yorkshire and Humber Living Wage Leadership Award 2015

Katy Moss has been chosen as the winner of the Living Wage Leadership Award 2015 for the Yorkshire region. The Living Wage Foundation organise these awards to recognise the life changing impact individuals have made by leading the way on the Living Wage Campaign within communities. The awards are part of Living Wage Week 2015, a national celebration of responsible pay for everybody, running from 1st - 7th November.

Trent Refractories Ltd is a manufacturing company based in Scunthorpe. A large part of the economy there is the Steel Industry which we supply into. Decisions about what to include in this standard are set by the public; it is a social consensus about what people need to make ends meet. Employers choose to pay the Living Wage on a voluntary basis. The Living Wage enjoys cross party support.

One Leadership Award winner has been named in each region of the UK: Scotland; Wales; Northern Ireland; the East Midlands; the West Midlands; the East of England; Yorkshire and the Humber; North East England; North West England; South East England; South West England; and London. The awards judged by an independent panel of community leaders from Citizens UK, national community organising charity and home of the Living Wage campaign.

2nd October 2015 - We Are Recruiting

First of all we would like to give thanks to all the hard work John Oakley has done over the last 26 years as our Production Manager. John has decided to slow down and take more time out of the business to focus on relaxing. We are pleased to say that he will be remaining with the company as Product Development Manager going forward. That does however leave some shoes to fill.

We are excited to announce that Trent Refractories are seeking to appoint two new members to our team. We are a small to medium sized company who manufacture bagged materials and precast refractory products in-house at our site in Scunthorpe.

We are a family run business and our 26 year history is important to us and our customers. We are honest, friendly and approachable and treat people how we like to be treated ourselves. Our aim is to be a leader in the refractory industry, providing an extensive product range and responsive service to our customers, primarily in the steel and foundry industries. The positions we have to offer are:

Operations Manager
Full time (salary negotiable dependent on experience) + benefits

We are looking for the right person to undertake a new role as Operations Manager. The candidate will undertake improvements in processes and help take the company forward.

The ideal candidate will be innovative, self-motivated, practical and have already demonstrated strong management skills. They will be a positive, motivating, engaging and inspiring influence to their team. Ideally this post would suit someone from a similar background in manufacturing and engineering.

Duties will include Managing Production and workforce, Meeting KPI’s and reporting, Facility Maintenance & Health and Safety. As the Operations Manager you will be part of the Senior Management Team and you will report to the General Manager.

Technical Sales Engineer
Full Time (salary negotiable dependent on experience) + benefits

We are looking for a candidate to undertake the new role of Technical Sales Engineer to work closely with customers to provide solutions and support our existing functions. Part of the role will be to develop efficiencies for their processes to enable them to provide better value in use.

The ideal candidate will have a positive outlook and disposition, be centred around customers and be output driven. We are looking for someone charismatic, practical with innovative technical knowledge about our types of products. Ideally this post would suit someone who wants to demonstrate and develop his or her technical abilities and have some working knowledge from the industry.

As the Technical Sales Engineer you will work closely with and be line managed by our Technical Sales Manager. Initially this will be on a 12 month contract with a view to making this role a permanent position.
